Smiling Raven Creations

Random Facts

  1. Why is your business called Smiling Raven Creations?

I get this question a lot from customers. My father was into alternative religions when I was growing up. He was particularly interested in Native American teachings. We spent a lot of time with a group of Lakota people, who had a presense in our community.

I grew up hearing a lot of different stories about Raven. Raven is a creator, a trickster, and a sore loser. He's also wise and playful. My favorite story is the tale of how Raven stole the sun. What better creature to name a business after? A creative and innovative animal such as Raven is the perfect match.

Ravens are HIGHLY intelligent birds. Scientists are just discovering that Ravens can problem solve using logic and trial and error. Some scientists have given tests which deem Ravens more intelligent than apes. Raven's have admiral qualities to be cherished and immitated.

I have a personal fetish for Ravens. I've always felt they were the underappreciated members of our society. I've been fortunate enough to always live near flocks of ravens. I love listening to them talk first thing in the morning.

  2. Who runs Smiling Raven Creations?

Allen and Jasmine Younkin. We run this business from our home. We sell locally and online. Most of our sales are word-of-mouth.

Jasmine (that's me) makes all of the jewelry by hand.

  3. How long have you been in business?

Technically, we've been in business for about a year now. However, we've been selling casually to locals for about two years.

  3. Where do I buy beads?

Beads can be found at a variety of sources. I buy mine from a little bit of everywhere. My main gemstone bead supplier is my Dad who runs Scott's Rock and Gem ( I also buy a lot of my beads locally at bead stores.

A word of caution. Be very aware of prices BEFORE buying from a beadstore. Often they charge 10-40x the amount they paid for beads. I will run between two or three stores, keeping track of prices and buying the lowest priced item. I save a lot of money by shopping around.

  4. What needles should I use?

The size of needle needed should be noted in the pattern. Generally, a size 3 aluminum needle will get the job done.

  5. Can I request a pattern for a certain bracelet?

Certainly. I'm happy to sell patterns of already completed work. Please check to see if the piece is noted as OOAK before asking.
